History

The Museum explores both local and global telecommunications history through working Step-by-Step and Crossbar electromechanical central office switches, antique wooden box phones, candlestick wall phones, classic rotary dial telephones, outside plant displays featuring poles, wire and splicing equipment as well as one of North America’s largest reference libraries for telecom, group sightseeing tours as well as one-on-one interactive tours with many artifacts to bring its rich and fascinating history alive! A new hands-on approach enables visitors to physically interact with many artifacts bringing this history alive!

Though Antonio Meucci, Alexander Graham Bell, and Elisha Gray independently devised devices capable of transmitting voicelike sounds over electrical cables during the 1860’s, Bell is widely considered the inventor of today’s phone as we know it. Bell received his first patent for it in 1876, after which it rapidly evolved in response to consumer needs; initially used on party lines where families could contact one another as well as business contacts.

Educational Programs

Telecommunication museums provide an immersive history lesson of communication technology’s development from Alexander Graham Bell’s early designs through to today’s multifunctional smartphones. HBEC staff, CAB members, and a researcher collaborated on an outreach telephone project designed to engage research registry participants during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our aim was to keep them engaged while also giving them an opportunity to express their needs more directly than during in-person group health engagement events.

HBEC callers were given access to an extensive listing of organizations and services they could recommend to research registry participants based on their expressed needs. The results of this telephone outreach program will provide valuable data that will aid future programs’ design and implementation as well as possibly assist with creating tools to facilitate research registry participation during public health emergencies.

Workshops

Tolland Historical Society offers a summer internship program for rising 7th through 12th graders. Students learn all aspects of museum operation from accessioning historic artifacts to designing displays; plus participating in Sunday events, researching local Tolland history and engaging with the public – earning community service hours and a reference letter in return!

Visitors of this museum may recall Sarah “Sally” Rooke, the switchboard operator who alerted others of an imminent flood and eventually sacrificed herself by warning others to leave before it came sweeping through. Unfortunately, Sally lost her life trying to assist those in danger.

Hello Montreal! was produced by Pointe-a-Calliere in collaboration with Bell using their extensive collection of historical material.

Collections

The museum boasts a vast collection of antique telephones spanning wooden wall-mounted magneto phones to rotary dial and novelty models, as well as operator switchboards from 1920s and 1960s, military telephones from WWI through to Gulf War, operator switchboards from WWI onwards, as well as numerous telephone-related tools and equipment.

The museum features interactive exhibitions which illustrate the development and role of telephone technology throughout history. Visitors can try their hand at operating switchboards used by telephone ladies over a century ago for connecting callers or see how an operator-based switching system could work for your home.

This collection is enhanced by an impressive library of telephone related books, catalogs and technical publications, making up one of the largest libraries of its kind in North America and open for research by both local visitors and international guests.

Exhibits

Our mission is to present the history and evolution of telephone technology over time, using actual working equipment as examples of its development and its effect on society. Additionally, the museum serves as a tribute to the craftsmanship, ingenuity and industry of those within the telecommunications community.

Volunteer docents who are current or retired telecommunications employees will take you on guided or self-guided tours to explain how each piece works and provide commentary about its history in Edmonton. They will answer all your questions while sharing fascinating tales from its history!

The museum features an eclectic assortment of antique wooden box phones, solid wood wall phones with rotary dials and candlestick phone booths from yesteryear as well as modern items including replica manual exchanges from small towns as well as one of North America’s largest collections of telecommunications reference materials. Visitors are encouraged to touch and explore freely without incurring an entrance fee!

Learning Resource Room

The Learning Resource Room features interactive displays designed to enable children and adults to experience how communication technology has progressed over time, such as a fully functioning switchboard that illustrates its change from manual systems to today’s handheld devices.

This collection illustrates the ingenuity, craftsmanship and industry that went into developing telephones from its earliest roots to mobile Internet-enabled phones used today by billions.

The museum also houses a library with books and archival materials which may be viewed by appointment only. Researchers must sign in at the desk and agree to adhere to NYU copyright regulations regarding research access.

Volunteers

There are volunteer opportunities suitable for volunteers of all ages and abilities available at the Museum. After reviewing your application, the Museum Manager may contact you for an interview if current needs match your qualifications and availability. Volunteering is a privilege of Museum membership (youth are exempt), but requires ongoing commitment.

Docent – Guide tours inside the Museum and outdoor Memorial, greeting visitors proactively while providing information about programs, exhibits, and other Museum activities.

Archives/Document Assistant – Rehouse or house photographs in archival quality photographic sleeves, such as plastic envelopes. This work includes sorting duplicates and excessively damaged photos from existing folders in Personal/Family, Subject, Streets/Addresses and Museum collections into new envelopes with their most logical identifier written on them.

Event Support – Welcome and assist at museum events such as Brain Games and History Fest.

Volunteer Gardeners care for five+ garden areas at the Society. Anyone interested can join either a regular or seasonal gardening team.

Manual Telephone System

SIGNALS offers many hands-on telephone-related displays, and one such demonstration is a working switchboard. This reminds visitors of an earlier time when most phones had manual dial phones connected via central switchboards that connected all calls.

This display explores the development of telephone use from Samuel Morse’s invention of telegraph to Bell phone’s release in 1876 and its subsequent adoption for long distance calls by early 1900s households.

The museum collection also includes glass insulators, paper-insulated copper wiring, old telephone parts such as switch gears and handsets as well as an audio and visual tribute to Sarah “Sally” Rooke, the switchboard operator who called for help when her community was threatened by flooding in 1908; her story was told through Loretta Turner from The Andy Griffith Show fame narrating this section of the exhibition.

Sheldon Hochheiser served for sixteen years as corporate historian for AT&T, curating historical exhibits and conducting oral histories with company executives. Additionally, he wrote extensively on its history; earned both an M.A. in History from University of Wisconsin as well as Ph.D. in Science History there; currently working as a professional historian and archivist.

It quickly gained popularity in England, especially in classical music and parlorscordion, on the other hand, originated in Vienna in the 1820s and is generally credited to Cyrill Demian, who patented a simple diatonic accordion in 1829. Demian’s accordion, which produced chords with a single key press, was designed to be accessible and portable. It became an instant hit among folk musicians across Europe due to its rhythmic sound and harmonic support. As the accordion spread through Europe, it evolved into two main types: the diatonic accordion, often used in folk music, and the chromatic accordion, popular in classical and jazz music.

Structure and Sound Production

The fundamental mechanics of the concertina and accordion are similar in that both use a bellows system to drive air across free reeds, producing sound. However, their structures and key systems set them apart.

The concertina is small and typically has a hexagonal shape with buttons on each end. These buttons are organized differently depending on the type of concertina: the English concertina, for instance, produces the same note regardless of bellows direction, while the Anglo concertina changes pitch depending on whether the bellows are pushed or pulled. The concertina’s button layout is linear, with buttons spread across both ends, creating a sound that many describe as bright, delicate, and agile. It is popular in English, Irish, and Scottish folk music, particularly for dance tunes, sea shanties, and ballads .

The aby contrast, is generally larger and rectangular, with a piano or button keyboard on one side and bass buttons on the other. The diatonic accordion changes pitch with the bellows direction, much like the Anglo concertina, and produces strong, rhythmic accompaniment. The chromatic accordion, however, has a more complex button layout that allows for a wider range of notes and can produce the same note regardless of bellows movement. This makes the accordion a staple in many genres, from French musette to tango to jazz, as it can create both melody and complex harmonies .

Role in Foular Music

Both the concertina and accordion have left an indelible mark on folk music. The concertina’s light, staccato sound makes it a favored instrument in Irish and English traditional music, where it frequently accompanies fiddles, pipes, and guitars. In Irish music, the Anglo concertina’s push-pull system allows players to create rhythmic patterns that drive dance tunes forward. Similarly, English Morris dance and sea shanty traditions often use the concertina for its compact size and resonant sound.

The accordion, especially the diatonic variety, is deeply embedded in folk traditions across Europe, particularly in France, Italy, and Germany, where it plays a central role in dance music. In the Americas, the accordion became a symbol of regional music, particularly in Mexican norteño, Cajun, and zydeco genres, where its powerful, full-bodied sound complements percussion and guitar. The chromatic accordion’s broad tonal range also allowed it to bridge into more classical and jazz compositions, expanding its appeal and adaptability.

Differences in Playability and Style

One of the most noticeable distinctions between the concertina and accordion is the playing technique and overall feel.
