Jefferson Barracks Park Telephone Building

Jefferson Barracks Park houses this museum dedicated to telephone history. From late 1880s through 2012, over 600 telephones and related equipment can be seen here, all displayed beautifully by volunteer docent Carol who gave a comprehensive tour.

Jefferson Barracks military post was the first active installation west of the Mississippi River and played an essential role in America’s westward movement by training and deploying soldiers for exploration along western frontier trails, protecting commerce and settlement, and leading exploration expeditions of western frontier lands.

As one of the nation’s largest military hospitals during the American Civil War, Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery treated many wounded troops sent in from distant battlefields. Nearly 220 Civil War generals are interred at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery including Union Generals Ulysses S Grant, William T Sherman, Winfield Scott Hancock and Montgomery Meigs as well as Confederate Generals Robert E Lee James Longstreet Albert Sidney Johnston Braxton Bragg buried there.

Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell was best known as the creator and inventor of the telephone, yet also an esteemed scientist. His passion and innovative spirit resulted in groundbreaking advancements across telecommunications, aviation, education for deaf people and even medicine for his beloved patients.

Bell’s interest in sound and communication stemmed from childhood. Both his father and grandfather were recognized speech therapists who used Visible Speech, an illustrated system designed to teach deaf students ‘oralism’. After two of his younger brothers succumbed to tuberculosis in spring 1867, the Bell family immigrated to Canada where Bell continued teaching deaf students how to speak (‘oralism).

Bell first unveiled his telephone at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight for Queen Victoria to see and immediately became famous worldwide. Additionally, he pioneered recording technology, giant tetrahedral kites, education for deaf children, as well as helping with deaf education. Bell is still leaving an impactful legacy through such innovations as cell phones and the Internet – not forgetting his contributions in medicine, aeronautics and marine engineering.

Samuel Morse

This exhibition presents Morse’s early telegraph receivers, such as one made out of an ordinary picture frame fastened to a table using clock wheels and lead pieces from an old clock. Also displayed is a drawing of Morse’s first telegraph mechanism: using ribbon of paper with ridged slugs to record dots and dashes that corresponded with letters in alphabet. Outdoor Telephone Cables

At first, telephone signals were transmitted across long distances using outdoor cables buried underground or strung on poles in rural areas and often passing through repeater huts before reaching another telephone.

Once a signal reached a telephone handset, it was converted back to electrical impulses for transmission over another set of copper wires until reaching its final destination.

The telephone company maintained outdoor cables. From direct burial to in duct systems, these must be protected from weather conditions that could expose them to moisture, which would short out and create problems for callers as well as call takers. To safeguard against this happening, paper cables (later PIC cables) were made that resembled lead cable but featured a plastic jacket; these were called paper cables or PIC cables for short.

Telephone Historical Centre serves as an acquisition, research, organization, documentation, and exhibition center for telecommunications history materials. Their collections stimulate children and adults alike in discovering engineering – from Alexander Graham Bell’s wooden wall-mounted operator directed phones through today’s multifunctional pocket cell phones.

As part of its response to the pandemic, HBEC initiated a telephone outreach project designed to keep registry participants engaged without needing in-person events or programs. This initiative collected various types of data including mental and physical well-being data as well as accessing resources, strengths and challenges in navigating through pandemic and more.

Additionally, the program team created an exhaustive directory of services callers could recommend to address participants’ expressed needs if necessary. Formative evaluation results demonstrated that this approach to telephone outreach could provide companionship and decrease social isolation during times of crisis; and published results have advanced literature and supported replicable similar projects.

One of the THG’s most beloved exhibits is a WWII era phone booth which allows visitors to leave video comments. This simple yet effective tool encourages all ages to reflect upon and share personal experiences while their videos are edited into the final presentation, drawing visitors back into the museum. This system has proven its worth as an effective means of drawing newcomers back.

The museum’s Traveling Trunks program brings its artifacts directly to schools and community groups for hands-on learning experiences, giving those who cannot visit directly an opportunity to gain knowledge about telecommunications history and its continuing impact on our world. This project used short telephone surveys to collect data on older adults’ experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic and provide resources. Caller feedback indicated that this project was fun and engaging, with callers particularly appreciating orientation training and debriefing meetings HBEC held to provide ongoing help for participants and their families during this research project.

Research

The museum provides an acquisition, research, organization, documentation and exhibition center for telephone history materials. Its collections foster interest in engineering through educational programs that compare modern telecommunications with vintage technology from yesteryear – creating the curiosity that drove Alexander Graham Bell to develop his attic workshop and develop communication devices that changed our world forever.

THG conducted a pilot project during the COVID 19 pandemic that consisted of telephone outreach to home care patients and creating a database to capture results of this effort. For privacy purposes, all data were de-identified before being analyzed using descriptive statistics. Initial findings indicated that phone calls facilitated access to health care by increasing patients’ ability to locate, contact and engage primary care providers. CTMs were also instrumental in helping patients transition smoothly to their new primary doctors, alleviating access difficulties and forgoing care thereby decreasing emergency room use and access problems. Furthermore, those involved with the call program identified additional outcomes not captured in the database such as improved personal and professional satisfaction for themselves and other participants in their program.
