History of the Telephone
Few inventions have had such an immense impact on society as the telephone. This exhibit explores its fascinating history, from its invention to the businesses that constructed its vast network of wires.
Alexander Graham Bell may be best known for patenting the first telephone in 1876, but other inventors had similar ideas prior to him. Elisha Gray, Antonio Meucci, Johann Reis and Samuel Morse all devised systems capable of transmitting sound electronically; but it was Bell who perfected their ideas into telephones.
This exhibit not only allows visitors to hear early telephone sounds, but also features historical details about Alexander Graham Bell and his inventions. Discover how he invented the photophone and developed work to produce human voices electronically with his first telegraph system using Morse code; there is even a crank wall phone and decorator phones on display!
Early Telephones
As telephone technology evolved, individuals would frequently visit local general stores or other central points in order to use the device. Privacy wasn’t yet a top concern as eavesdroppers and switchboard operators often interfered in conversations.
Claims regarding who invented the telephone vary, but there can be little doubt that Alexander Graham Bell was first to create a working phone and patent it, giving him a significant commercial edge over Antonio Meucci and Elisha Gray.
Almon Strowger of Kansas City created the first automatic dialing system after becoming concerned that operators were diverting his calls away from his business and towards competitors in his industry. His system eventually came to be known as “Strowger Switch.”

Furthermore, telephones enable immediate problem-solving solutions and ensuring urgent enquiries are resolved swiftly.
As technology rapidly develops, small business owners should remain mindful of how they can leverage phone systems effectively to meet customers’ demands. Combining telephones with other digital tools, businesses can develop an efficient customer-oriented communication plan to meet customers’ expectations.
